CPRS D1 LENS Program
Goals & Successes
The L.E.N.S. Program combines hands-on experiences, networking opportunities, and guided tours of unique city features, it allows members to connect directly with leadership, observe governance in action, and gain valuable insights. This innovative approach fosters collaboration, encourages cross-city learning, and offers an interactive platform for growth, making it a transformative addition to District 1’s professional development and community offerings.
Goals:
- Foster an innovative new program in our district inspired by the year of development from the CPRS CARD Strategic Framework that also enhanced our sense of community.
- Attract potential new board members in a fun and approachable way that combined networking, learning, and professional growth.
- Showcase the uniqueness between cities and towns within District 1 by providing a platform to hear directly from city leaders as well as permit board members, district members, and guests an opportunity to look closer at our differences and learn from them.
Successes:
- Established a well balanced half day program that provides the right blend of business, education, networking, and development. Successfully hosted seven L.E.N.S. in partnership with host cities and towns throughout District 1 this year.
- Achieved a dynamic and well balanced program that brought together leaders, members, and recreation professionals from entry level all the way to department directors. The program proved it is engaging - It brought district members consistently back to the table who are now planning to join the District 1 Board in a leadership position in 2025-26. It also attracted and secured sponsorship funding for the lunch portion of the program in the second half of the year.
- Highly unique in practical application, there was a great deal of “boots on the ground” seeing, learning, and experiencing. Board members were able to think creatively about what to showcase in their cities in addition to creating an opportunity to connect positively with their own city leaders. The L.E.N.S. featured everything from a walking tour of Oxbow Commons Park Project in Napa; a tour the Veronda/ Falletti Ranch in Cotati; a tour of the Ukiah Latitude Observatory - one of six observatories located near the parallel of 39° 08′ north latitude; a walking tour of Yountville’s Art Walk featuring 37 unique pieces of public art and more in other cities and towns throughout the district!
Innovative Approach(es)
The L.E.N.S.program is a pilot program this year, it’s never been done in District 1 and may even be innovative in nature to CPRS as a whole, it’s a true first. It is innovative because it offers members the chance to visit different cities within the district, enjoy lunch-and-learn sessions, and take guided tours of standout facilities or attractions.
This year, the L.E.N.S. Program hosted (7) seven unique programs in seven separate cities and towns which drew the attendance of Recreation Specialists, Department Supervisors and Managers, and even members outside the field of Recreation. Over the course of the year, the LENS Program drew over 20 participants who were often new attendees to District 1 events. Attendees expressed appreciation, joy, and delight for the opportunity to connect, learn, and engage in so many fun and outside of the box environments, making the program a valuable addition to the district's offerings.
Senior Recreation staff, Parks & Recreation Directors, City and Town Managers, and Commissioners from each of our hosting cities consistently shared feedback about their excitement and enthusiasm for the L.E.N.S. Program and expressed their pleasure in taking part in it.
There’s evidence that the L.E.N.S. Program actually fosters City leaders to engage further with CPRS and to reconnect with the purpose and meaning behind CPRS. Multiple City Leaders expressed a desire to engage further with CPRS through programs, requested more information on current activities in our District or to learn more about our annual conference.
Midway through the year, the L.E.N.S. Program secured a sponsor in KYA Group, who agreed to become the official lunch sponsor for all remaining 2024-25 L.E.N.S. events. The District 1 Board invited KYA Group to attend a L.E.N.S. event as part of the sponsorship consideration and, after experiencing the program firsthand, KYA Group recognized its value and immediately committed to supporting the lunch-and-learn portion.
The L.E.N.S. Program truly is a game-changer because it combines learning through direct experience, engagement with influential leaders, and exploration of innovative ideas and a closer look at physical spaces, facilities, or programs —all while fostering meaningful connections with fellow recreation professionals. It’s a perfect blend of education, collaboration, and discovery, making it a truly transformative experience for everyone involved.
