The Senior Symposium is the cornerstone event of the Aging Section, designed specifically for professionals working with seniors, this one-day conference will cover a wide range of topics to help you better serve the older adult demographic. From understanding the unique needs of seniors to learning effective communication strategies, our training will equip you with the tools you need to excel in your role.

Title: Effective Communication with Community Stakeholders

The topic will include:

  • How to effectively communicate with combative patrons
  • De-escalation techniques
  • Verbal deflectors to stay on point
  • A model for effective communication

Speaker: Debbie Rose, PHD, FNAK, Professor and Chair Emerita, Department of Kinesiology, Director Emerita, Center for Successful Aging California State University, Fullerton

Title: Promoting Whole Person Wellness for Successful Aging

In this presentation, you will be introduced to the whole-person wellness model developed by Montague (1994) and the research supporting a multidimensional approach to wellness in promoting successful aging.  How each of the six dimensions described in the model can be easily integrated into community-based programming designed for older adults will also be described. Adopting a wellness approach is intended to shift the focus from what people cannot do to what they can do! Age, illness, physical and/or mental ability need not limit the perceived level of wellness that an individual can achieve.

Looking for new ideas to help grow or manage your current volunteer program? Interested in developing a new volunteer program? Get the answers to all of your burning questions surrounding volunteer management, recruitment, onboarding, and everything in between!
